David Ortiz Savon (23) is a music teacher at the Music Academy in Guantánamo. His students love him a lot.
His greatest wish in life? „To see the world.“
What does he lack in order to be happy? „That people appreciate his music.“
What is woman for him? „The greatest expression of life.“
About teaching:
It’s not easy. It’s students who come from the hills, where they have no culture. They know nothing about music. With time, they learn, and something comes out.
What does he like in Changüi?
The most important aspect of Changuy is the complexity of the music’s syncopation, this autochthonous music from Guantánamo is always syncopated, Cuban syncopation goes 1-2, 1-2-3, but more complicated.
This music goes with the beat and the beat goes. Those who don’t know it think the music has nothing to do, but those who do know the music is important, that’s its nature.
About young people in Guantánamo:
The mood is bad because there is no entertainment, no place to go for the youth except the cabarets: La Ruina, El Nevada, the disco at the hotel, but no one can afford them.
The future? Getting worse. We’ll be worse if we keep going like this.

David plays almost all percussion instruments, especially Catá, Cajón and Maquina de ritmo.
